     Do you love movies? (Who doesn't?) Have you ever worried that one of your favorites won't be around for your great-grandchildren to enjoy? You can help to prevent that by voting to have your favorite films added to the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress:

     The culturally significant movies selected for the Registry will be preserved and archived by the Library of Congress, working in conjunction with other film preservation organizations. So, take a look at the films that are already on the Registry, then start sending in your recommendations. You can recommend up to 50 titles each year.

Photography Exhibit

ACT Help

Summer Programs - Successful

Whew!! Did we have a busy laugh filled summer!! I hope everyone was able to visit their Public Library this summer and experience the fun. We weren't the only busy people this summer, you were too. Collectively the library teens read and submitted 999 book reviews. Those who attended the Central Library program may see their photo soon on the column in the Young Adult area. We had sixteen programs plus a teen acting troup who practiced 20 hours and presented three programs this summer.

In the month of April, the Animanga Club (those interested in anime and manga) will be making fake weapons and testing their strength. Members are asked to bring CD's that have been damaged to make chest armor. Bring your inventive minds too.

The Book Club will be talking about Science Fiction in April and Fantasy titles in May. Members will also have the opportunity to record their opinions about the books that they found in the library. Their recording and those already submitted will be placed on this blog page for our readers to listen to.

The Teen Advisory Board will be choosing summer programs and planning the end of the summer party. This summer's theme is "Make Waves at your Library." There is a rumor going round that we may be having a Greek/Roman Mythology end of the summer party that might involve togas, Percy Jacksonish characters, mythological characters, and loads of fun for all who join the reading program.

Book Casting in the Radio Lab

Have you wanted to pretend that you are broadcasting on the radio? Do you like telling others how much you just loved this book that you read? Do you like writing... poems, persuasive speeches, dialogs, raps? If you like any of the above, we have just the event for you.

We will have a Radio Lab set up in the Young Adult Area of the Central Library during the Spring Break from March 29 - April 1 and you can record your oppinion of a book that you have read recently and that the library owns. The Radio Lab will be open from 9-4 each day. Simply bring a double spaced copy of the review that you'd like to record to the library for approval. We will review it and set you up for your recording session. The finished recording will be linked with the book cover and will be posted on the Teen Scene Blog on April 15th.

This program is our way of celebrating Teen Literature Appreciation Day, April 15th.
PS. Ask your teachers if they are offering extra credit to anyone who participates in this program.

Spring Break Game Days

This holiday's two Game Days will be played in the Young Adult Area at the back of the library. On Tuesday, March 30th we will play electronic and board games from 1-4 pm. Come and play Guitar Hero, Star Wars, Uno Attack, chess, Life, Apples to Apples, Jenga and many other games.

Test out your skills and sign up for the Guitar Hero Rock A Thon that will be held on Thursday, April 1st from 1-5 pm. Four top winners will be chosen and will win a book. Teens can watch or play board games while they wait their turn in the tournament.

Emoticon Contest

The fourth annual Emoticon Contest is now under way. You too can have your picture made as you try to make the best of ten emoticon faces chosen by the Central Teen Advisory Board members. Once all entries have been received by Feb. 26th each person's photo will appear with the emoticon on a ballot from March 7th through 19th. The public is encouraged to visit the Calcasieu Parish Public Library's website to choose their favorite photo. Students 6th through 12th grade are eligible to enter but must have parents sign a permission form. Each emoticon will have a different winner, so you have ten chances to win. Can you make the best emoticon face? Stop by any CPPL branch to pick up the form and enter.

Animanga Convention 2010

Game Day for the Holidays

Test your brain, coordination, and voice skills against other teens using Sing Star, Monopoly, Rock Band, Uno Attack, Guitar Hero, Jenga, Dance Dance Revolution and many more games. Where will this challenge be held? Well at the Central Public Library of course, just come to the second floor large meeting room and bring your friends. This is a mega endurance challenge to all teens who attend because the program on Monday, November 23rd will last from 1 until 4 pm. See you there with game fingers, feet, and voice ready.

November Club Meetings

Come One Come All!! We have clubs for Anime and Manga fans that are meeting the first and third Wednesdays each month at 5 pm. This group enjoys manga art, oriental food, making fake weapons, anime movies, martial arts and personal safety; and they have big plans for January. Visit us and learn what those plans are.

If you like reading and want to find more titles, our book club will meet Sat., Nov. 14th from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Mystery books will be the topic of discussion for this month. If you visit, bring a mystery book that you love and be prepared to share. If you convince the most people to read your book, you'll get a prize.

If you'd like to help plan our programs or give your opinion about how to attract teens to the library, our Teen Advisory Board will meet Nov. 14th from Noon until 1:30 pm. Game Days have been planned for the Thanksgiving and Christmas school holidays. New ideas for the spring, Teen Tech Week and the summer are being sought. Ideas for re-arranging and improving the new YA area will also be discussed.

Teen Read Week Book Review Contest Winners

Students from around Calcasieu Parish were asked to write a book review of one of the books that they enjoyed reading. Their review was submitted to area Calcasieu Parish Public Libraries, compiled, and judged in two categories: Middle School and High School. Of the more than 200 entries, three winners were chosen from each category. Titles included old favorites as well as new authors. Many of the titles reflected the growing interest in the fantasy and fable categories.

Fright Night Scream Fest

Fright Night Scream Fest is a time for sharing spooky stories eating Halloween treats and using your imagination to finish a spooky story. All this fun set in a haunted castle setting. Come in you favorite costume and lend more atmosphere to the gathering. This program is open to teens 6th - 12th grade and any spooky storytellers that wish to practice their craft. This Frightful event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th from 6:30-7:45 pm upstairs in the large meeting room.

Movies to Scream About

Teen Library Groups Begin

Did you know that the Central Library has a new teen group in addition to the two previous teen groups (TAB and Book Club) which meet during the school year? This summer the new Animanga Club was formed. Teens from 6th through 12th grade are invited to come to an informational meeting about all three groups on Thursday, August 27th at 7 pm. We would like at least one parent or legal guardian to come as well, since permission forms will be distributed. You can learn about and sign up for any of the three programs or come by the Teen Desk to pick up the forms if you cannot come to the meeting. Bring a friend and encourage them to join as well. Members of these groups make new friends, learn more about their interest, help the community and the library grow, and get something great to put on their work and college applications.

Tale Weavers Program

This year the Tale Weavers presented their skits for the Children's Story time at the Central and Carnegie Libraries. The teens enjoyed acting silly and getting lots of laughs. They even broke into one of their skits at the end of the summer TRP Exhibition and Reception Program, to the enjoyment of the parents and teens present. Reminiscent Writing Documentaries

Whoa! So cool! Did you know that horses once walked through a downtown hotel on World War II's VE Day? Did you know that people lived without electricity and still managed to have a refrigerator; or that school buses once had only four bench seats? * Come One, Come All * _The Tale Weavers Are in Town_

The Tale Weavers, a teen acting group, will be presenting this year's summer skits at the Central Library this Tuesday, July 14 at 10 am and again at 2 pm. Come see this lively group's version of such stories as "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" and "The Frog Prince Continued" as well as various Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky poems. You can find out what is burried in the ground and hiding in the attick too. Come prepared to laugh, wiggle, and clap for your favorite skits.

Reminiscent Writing Update

Teens and members of the older generation have shared experiences and compared notes. Several interviews have been conducted and are being edited now. Others teens will be interviewing their partner soon. Everyone involved in the Reminiscent Writing Program, should have their permission forms signed and turned back in before Friday July 17th so that their documentary may be entered in the TRP Exhibition and Reception. Please ask Ms Susan for the correct forms. If you know what forms you need, you may pick them up and turn them in at the Information Desk at the Central Library. Please try to bring photos or memorabilia to be scanned so that the scanned image may be added to the project during the editing process.

I've heard some wonderful tales! Everything from goats jumping out of second story windows to horses in the lobby of a downtown hotel. I can't wait to hear what stories are revealed next.

AN INVITATION

Everyone is invited to come meet and greet our teen STARS at the end of the summer Teen Reading Program Exhibition and Reception. Teens have been expressing themselves all summer long in a variety of ways, using various mediums. The exhibition is a celebration of some of the ways that teens have been expressing themselves. Some teens have used Duct Tape, others paper, some have created self portraits on the computer, while others have created movies, and some combined multiple mediums and have researched the lives of the older generation and preserved their memories using print and media.

Come one and all to see the results of their efforts on Monday, July 20th from 2:00-3:30 pm.

Interviews, Films, Photos = WHAT?

Are you interested in the arts of interviewing, filming,and journalism?

Have you wondered what life was like before you were born?

Here is your opportunity to expand and explore those interests. We will develop interview questions, film and record your interview and incorporate photos into a documentary and accompanying script.

The story you choose to tell can be funny or serious. Everyone has a story to tell. Putting film and photos together like your favorite Hollywood producer is easier than you think.

Animanga Club's First Meeting

Boy do we have some things planned for you!! This summer you can learn where and how to get your cartoons posted on the Internet for others to see. A McNeese State University art student and current President of their Anime Club will show you how to create professional looking cartoons. At another meeting you will learn the history of and see a demonstration of martial arts. You may also learn a few safety moves of your own. We will discuss what other programs we would like to have at future meetings as well. Come and learn more about the Japanese culture, art, and history or just share your love of the books or movies. Remember to bring your friends.

Tale Weavers Select Material

This year's Tale Weavers, a summer teen acting group, have chosen a variety of poems and children's stories to present for this year's program. "Chasing a Dragon Through the Woods," "Baseball is Safer," The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and Frog Prince Continued are some of the stories and poems that have been selected. Practice will be every Monday and Wednesday morning from 10 am to 12 noon. One or two openings are still available for teens who are interested in being silly and laughing a lot. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to share your love of reading.

Tale Weavers

Interested in acting? Love reading? Want to share your interest? Join the Tale Weavers this summer and share your skills with the children at local Calcasieu Parish Public Libraries. Teens from the 6th through 12th grades will choose stories and poems from the children's collection and bring them to life through drama, puppetry and music. Practices are held Monday and Wednesday mornings in June from 10 am - 12 noon with the program presented the first few weeks of July. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in contact Ms. Susan to be included. Registration for this program concludes June 1st.

Summer Programs Coming

This summer you can "Express Yourself" at the Central Library by creating short movies, learning to juggle, experimenting with different art forms, participating in a karaoke afternoon, doctoring your photos, joining an Animanga Club, creating a duct tape work of art, creating a reminiscent writing project, or joining in an improve session. This summers teen programs will be held most Monday Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 2-4 p.m. beginning June 1 and continuing through July 20th.

Don't forget the Teen Summer Reading Program either. Record the amount of time you spend reading and have your name submitted for prize drawings. Check out the ever changing selection of new YA titles available for check out too.

NEW Animanga Club

Anime and Manga fans, we have a new place for you! The Central Library is starting a new club for anime and manga fans called the "Animanga Club." This club will have its first meeting on Friday, June 5th from 2-4 pm in the upstairs meeting room at Central library. If you love reading, watching, drawing and learning about different cultures this is the place for you. We will have programs and demonstrations at each of our summer meetings then regroup for the school year. Additional meetings will be held on Friday, June 12th, June 26th and July 10th. If you can't make all of the meetings, make as many as you can. All of our meetings are open to teens with like interests. So tell your friends and sign up today!
